Chocolate Cake and Sheetcake Recipes

Here's some quick and easy cake recipes for chocolate cakes. Chocolate cakes are probably the easiest and tastiest to make at home. Yes, I know that it's easy and cheaper to buy the cake mixes, but there's nothing better than homemade.

$100 Cake Recipe

chocolate cake
    Sift together:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp soda
  • 3 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • Mix together good:
  • 1/2 cup salad dressing
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Then add to dry ingredients and bake in cake pans until done at 350°.

Easy Chocolate frosting - Add powdered cocoa to sweetened condensed milk until it is of a spreading consistency.

Prize Chocolate Cake

  • 1/4 cup butter - soft
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 tsp soda
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 3/4 cup flour

Grease and flour pans, or just oil the bottom of the pan. Mix well in order given after each addition. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 min. Remove from pans after 10 minutes of cooling. Use a 9 x 13 pan if you like, cook 25 min.

Quickie Chocolate Cake

    Mix:
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 cup flour
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp. soda
  • 6 tbsp cocoa

  • Add to dry ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup oil
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cup cold water

Grease and flour pan. Beat together and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake

  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 1/4 tsp soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/3 cup water

Combine butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a large mixer bowl. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder and salt. add alternately with water to creamed mixture. Blend just until combined. Pour into two greased and floured 9 inch pans or a 13 x 9 pan.

Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake tests done in the middle. Cool 10 minutes, remove from pan. Cool completely and frost with Hershey's Buttercream Frosting.

Sour Cream Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

Beat eggs, add sugar and sour cream. Sift flour, soda and cocoa together. Add to cream mixture. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees.

Easy Chocolate Cake

  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 Tblsp cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tblsp vinegar
  • 6 Tblsp oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Combine all ingredients. Bake 325 for 25 minutes

    1 Minute Fudge Frosting
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup white syrup
  • 4 Tblsp cocoa
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c milk
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Boil 1 minute, cool and beat.

Sheet Cake recipes

Chocolate Sheet Cake Recipe

I added the chocolate icing because it is the one that goes with this recipe. This is a great sheet cake for a large group or party. I have been making it for years. If you don't have buttermilk, add a teaspoon of vinegar to a cup of milk and let it sit 5 min.
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/2 cup salad oil

Boil water, margarine and oil. Pour over flour and sugar and beat until creamy. Add buttermilk, soda and eggs, beat again. Pour into greased and floured 17 x 11 inches. Bake at 400 for 16 to 18 minutes.

    Icing
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Boil margarine, cocoa and buttermilk. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, beat and spread on cooled cake. Sprinkle pecans on top or add to the icing and spread.

Chocolate Texas Sheet Cake

    Sift together in large bowl:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  • Bring to a boil stirring constantly:
  • 2 sticks margarine
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 Tblsp. cocoa

  • In a small bowl:
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda

Beat and add last 2 mixtures to the first mix. Pour into greased cookie sheet, about 12x18 inches. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.

    Frosting:
    Bring to a boil:
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 4 Tblsp. cocoa
  • 6 Tblsp. milk

After boiling add 1 pound sifted powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Put on cake as soon as it comes from the oven.

Devil's Food Sheet Cake

  • 3/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 2 1/4 tsp. soda dissolved in buttermilk

Mix cocoa, butter, shortening in boiling water. Add remaining ingredients. Beat. This will be a very thin batter. Bake at 350 degrees in a 11x16x1 inch pan for approximately 30 minutes.

Chocolate Cookie Sheet Cake

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 4 Tblsp. cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda

Mix flour and sugar together. Take saucepan, add margarine, Crisco, cocoa and water, bring to boil. Pour over flour and sugar. Stir well, add 1/2 cup buttermilk, eggs, vanilla and soda, mix well.
Bake 15 minutes at 400 degrees in greased 11x14 pan.

    Frosting:
    Start frosting when you put cake in oven.
  • 1 stick margarine
  • 4 Tblsp. cocoa
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • Melt and bring to boil. Remove from heat, add:
  • 1 box powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped

Salad dressing cakes do not use any eggs, and turn out nice and moist.

Salad Dressing Cake 1

    Sift together:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 4 tsp. cocoa
  • Add to:
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup salad dressing (Miracle Whip)

Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Can be baked in iron skillet.

    ICING:
  • 3 squares chocolate, melted in double boiler
  • 4 Tblsp. butter added to 5 Tblsp. milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Mississippi Mud Cakes

  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 4 cups marshmallow cream

Beat eggs slightly, add sugar, flour and cocoa. Pour in melted butter, mix and add vanilla. Mix well.

Pour into greased 9x13-inch cake pan. Bake 25 minutes at 350°. Let cool 10 minutes. Spread cake with marshmallow creme.

Let set about 15 minutes, then frost with frosting.

    Frosting:
  • 1 stick melted butter
  • 2 to 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 6 Tblsp. milk
  • 1 Tblsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup pecans

Melt butter, add cocoa and milk. Stir until bubbly. Stir about 1 minute, then add powdered sugar, vanilla and pecans. Mix well and spread on cake.

Missionary Cake

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 1 cup jam or raisins
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 5 Tblsp cocoa
  • 1 cup flour

Mix all ingredients except flour and boil 3 minutes. Let cool and blend in flour. Bake in loaf pan 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Sauce or Filling for Missionary Cake:
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 Tblsp. butter
  • 3 Tblsp. white syrup
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup milk

Mix and boil 3 minutes. Beat until cool. Spread on Missionary Cake.
