What to Make with Box Cake Mix

You are here:
Old Recipe Book >> Bakery >> Holiday Recipes >> Cake Mix

It's always fun trying to figure out different thing to make with cake mixes. Here's some recipes that I have used. Also see the Punch Bowl Cake, it uses yellow cake mix too, and how about a Child's Birthday Cake Idea.

Snowflake Dream Cake

1 pkg yellow cake mix
20 oz can crushed pineapple, (save juice)
3 oz Cream Cheese
3 oz vanilla pudding mix (instant)
1 cup milk
8 oz Cool Whip
coconut
nuts (optional)
maraschino cherries

Add enough water to pineapple juice to use as the liquid in the cake mix. Make the cake (as directed on the box). Place in well greased and floured 9x12 pan. Bake for 20 minutes at 350. Cool and leave in pan. With mixer, blend cream cheese, pudding, and milk. Fold in drained pineapple. Spread over cooled cake. Then spread with cool whip. Sprinkle with coconut and nuts. Cool in refrigerator for several hours. Cut into squares. Serve with maraschino cherry on top.

Ugly Duckling Cake

1 pkg. yellow cake mix
1 can fruit cocktail
2 1/3 cup coconut
2 eggs
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup evaporated milk

Combine cake mix, cocktail with the syrup and 1 cup of the coconut and eggs in a large bowl. Blend, then beat for 2 minutes. Pour into a greased 13x9 pan Bake until cake springs back when touched. Bring butter, sugar and milk to a boil. Add rest of coconut and optional pecans. Spoon over hot cake in pan. Serve warm or cool

Sock It To Me Cake

1 box butter cake mix
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 Kraft or Wesson oil
4 eggs (one at a time)

Chop 1/4 cup nuts, mix with 2 tbsp. brown sugar and 1-1/4 tsp. cinnamon. Put half cake batter in pan. Put nut mixtute over it, then add rest of batter. Bake 1 hour at 325. Let cake set 15 minutes after it is baked, before turning upside down on cake plate. When cool sprinkle cake with small amount of powdered sugar. Use Bundt cake pan.

Pig Eating Good Cake

1 box Duncan Hines Butter yellow cake mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup oil
1 can mandarin oranges drained

Mix this altogether. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes.

Frosting:
13 and 1/2 oz tub of Cool Whip
1 pkg instant coconut cream pudding
1 can crushed pineapple, drained

Dump Cake

Cherry pineapple dump cake recipe. Just dump it!

1 box yellow cake mix
1 can cherry pie filling
1 can crushed pinapple-drained
2 sticks of butter

Heat oven to 350 In a 13x9 pan Dump a can of crushed pinapple and spread it Dump a can of cherry filling on it and spread. Dump the cake mix on it Slice pieces of butter and dot the top Place in oven 350 for 35 min.

Tip: You can also mix the softened butter with the mix and sprinkle on the top for more of a fruit crisp.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

1 pkg. yellow cake mix
1 small can pineapple rings
1/2 brown sugar
1/2 stick butter
jar of cherries(optional)

Preheat oven to 325. Put a deep cast iron skillet with the butter in the oven till it melts. Open your can of juice and drain. Use the juice as part of the liquid for the cake mix. Prepare your yellow cake mix. Take skillet out of the oven, mix the brown sugar in the butter. Place the circles of sliced pineapple in the pan. Put your cherries in the center of each pineapple ring. Pour all the cake batter in. Put in oven. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Check with a toothpick. If it comes out clean, then the center is done.

Take the skillet out of the oven, let it cool for 10 minutes, then carefully place a large plate on top of the skillet and flip it over. This makes a deep cake. Using a cast iron skillet works best, but if you don't have one then just use a deep heavy skillet. Also try using a circular mold like a bundt pan or angel food cake pan.

Yellow Cake and Icing

1 box yellow cake mix
1/4 cup oleo
Mix cake as directed on box adding melted oleo.

Icing: 2 cups brown sugar and 1/2 cup oleo.
Cream oleo margarine and brown sugar. Put this mixture in bottom of 9x12x2 cake pan. Pour batter over top of sugar. Bake at 375 degrees preheated oven until toothpick test comes out clean, or as directed on cake box.

Strawberry Jello Cake

Preheat oven to 350

1 box white cake mix and the ingredients that are on the box.
1 box frozen strawberries
1 container Cool Whip
1 box strawberry jello

Bake white cake mix as directed on the box. When cake is done, immediately punch holes in cake with a meat fork. Fix jello as directed on box. Pour over cake. Let refrigerate about 3 hours. Then mix the strawberries with cool whip. Spread over top.

Note: I made these for a pot luck, and even though most of them got ate, I thought they were too dry. Interesting, but I will not be making them again.

Apple Bars made from Cake Mix

If you have a cake mix and can of apple pie filling this sounds like a tasty easy recipe. Seems like you could use other flavors of pie filling too.

3/4 cup soft butter or margarine
1 pkg white or yellow cake mix
1 can apple pie filling
1/2 cup flaked coconut

In a large bowl cut butter into cake mix. Set aside 1 cup. Press remaining mixture into a 13 x 9 pan. Spoon apple pie filling evenly over cake mixture. In a small bowl combine reserve cake mixture and coconut, sprinkle over pie filling. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Cool slightly before cutting into 3 x 1 1/2 inch bars.
